Before the AGM begins: where global connections come to life
AGM Life | Episode 01 — Bucharest 2026

An Annual General Meeting is much more than a gathering of professionals. It is where international relationships are renewed, perspectives are exchanged, and the foundations of future collaboration are strengthened. As IGAL prepares to meet in Bucharest, we take you behind the scenes of the first moments that make every AGM so special.
The AGM experience: more than an annual meeting
What makes an international professional network truly valuable? Is it the geographical reach of its members? The diversity of their expertise? The ability to connect clients with trusted professionals across borders? Certainly, all of these matter. But the real strength of a global network lies in something less tangible and far more enduring: the relationships between the people who bring it to life.
Every year, IGAL Network's Annual General Meeting (AGM) provides an opportunity for members from different countries, legal systems and professional backgrounds to come together. Over several days, formal meetings, professional discussions and social occasions create an environment in which international connections become genuine personal relationships. And this experience begins well before the first official conference.
Tuesday: the arrival dinner: reconnecting across borders
For many members, attending an AGM means travelling considerable distances, sometimes across continents and time zones. Arriving a day early offers an opportunity to settle in, discover the host city and, most importantly, reconnect with familiar faces. The optional Tuesday evening dinner is traditionally the first informal gathering of the AGM experience. There are no presentations, no formal agenda and no expectations beyond enjoying the company of fellow members. Some participants arrive alone; others travel with their partners or spouses, who are themselves an important part of the IGAL community. Around the dinner table, conversations resume almost effortlessly.
Members catch up on the months since their last meeting, share personal milestones, exchange news from their respective countries and rediscover the pleasure of spending time together. For newcomers, these early gatherings can also provide a particularly welcoming introduction to the network.
The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and personal, a reminder that behind every international professional connection stands a human relationship. It is often in these unstructured moments that the strongest bonds begin to develop.
Wednesday morning: the final board meeting of the year
While early arrivals and accompanying guests enjoy some free time in Bucharest, Wednesday morning marks an important moment in the network's governance. From 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the current Board gathers for its final meeting in its existing composition before the elections and renewals associated with the AGM. This meeting represents both a conclusion and a transition. It is an opportunity to review the network's progress, reflect on the work accomplished throughout the year and discuss the priorities that will help shape its future.
Behind the visible activities of an international professional network lies an essential structure of governance, strategic planning and collective commitment.
The Board plays a central role in maintaining that continuity while ensuring that IGAL continues to evolve in response to the needs of its members and the changing international environment.
Following the meeting, Board members gather for a closing lunch from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. This final shared moment offers an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of the current Board and conclude its work in a spirit of collegiality. Meanwhile, other members and accompanying guests can enjoy the city at their own pace before the official programme begins that evening.
Wednesday evening: the welcome reception, The AGM truly begins!
If Tuesday's dinner is an informal reunion, Wednesday evening's Welcome Reception is the moment when the entire IGAL community comes together. Members and accompanying guests gather for the first official social occasion of the AGM. The setting is elegant, the dress code professional, and the atmosphere combines the sophistication of an international gathering with the warmth of meeting old friends. Often hosted at the conference hotel, the Welcome Reception and dinner, generally running from around 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., offer a comfortable environment in which everyone can reconnect.
There is something particularly distinctive about these evenings. Across the room, conversations unfold between people whose daily professional lives may take place thousands of kilometres apart. Lawyers and other professionals exchange news about their firms, discuss developments in their markets and share perspectives on the economic, regulatory and social changes affecting their countries. Meanwhile, accompanying partners and spouses renew friendships of their own.
Over the years, these relationships become part of the network's identity, contributing to the sense of belonging that makes returning to an IGAL AGM feel like a reunion rather than simply another professional event.
When informal conversations become professional insight
The value of these evenings extends far beyond networking in the conventional sense.
Consider a European lawyer advising a client that is exploring an acquisition in Asia or planning to establish a subsidiary in Latin America. During a Welcome Reception, that lawyer may speak with a fellow IGAL member about recent changes in the local business environment, employment practices, regulatory expectations or the broader economic climate. Months later, when a client raises a similar question, that conversation may suddenly become relevant.
The lawyer remembers not simply a country or a name, but a discussion with someone who understands the realities of doing business in that jurisdiction. That connection can become the starting point for a more informed conversation with the client and, where appropriate, an introduction to a trusted local professional for specific advice. This is one of the distinctive advantages of belonging to an international network. Global knowledge becomes more useful when it is shared through trusted personal relationships.
The conversations that take place over dinner help members develop a broader understanding of international business environments. They also expose participants to different ways of thinking, working and approaching challenges. Such exchanges enrich professional judgement, encourage cultural awareness and create opportunities for collaboration that may never have emerged through formal channels alone.
A global perspective, built one conversation at a time
In an increasingly interconnected world, understanding another jurisdiction requires more than reading legislation or following international headlines. Business decisions are influenced by local customs, economic conditions, political developments, social expectations and professional practices. The ability to exchange perspectives directly with professionals living and working in those environments adds an invaluable human dimension.
An AGM provides precisely this opportunity. Members do not merely learn about international markets. They hear about them from people who experience their complexities every day. And because these discussions take place in an atmosphere of mutual trust, they often go beyond the information available in formal reports or public presentations. The result is a network that becomes more knowledgeable, more connected and better equipped to identify the right expertise when international questions arise.
Bucharest 2026: the beginning of another IGAL Story
As IGAL Network gathers in Bucharest for its 2026 Annual General Meeting, these first two days will once again demonstrate why the AGM experience is so important to the life of the network. Tuesday's informal dinner will welcome early arrivals and revive familiar connections. Wednesday morning will bring the current Board together for its final meeting before the next chapter in the network's governance.
And Wednesday evening's Welcome Reception will mark the official reunion of the wider IGAL community. Three moments, each with a different purpose, but all contributing to the same objective: strengthening the relationships that make international cooperation possible.
Because the true value of an international professional network is not measured only by the number of countries it represents. It is also measured by the trust, friendship and shared understanding that its members build over time. And sometimes, the most meaningful international connections begin with a simple conversation over dinner.
